Tonga's new plane from China delayed

7:01 am on 5 August 2014

A new aircraft gifted to Tonga by China spent the weekend stranded in Papua New Guinea.

Tonga's acting Prime Minister says the Y12 plane was to be commissioned yesterday but when it got to PNG, a local customs official, a Seventh Day Adventist, refused to process its arrival on Saturday.

Radio Tonga reports that the plane is now travelling to Vava'u through Vanuatu and Fiji.

It is expected to be commissioned today.
