12:40 pm on 7 August 2014

The prime minister Frank Bainimarama has told a gathering at the launch of Fiji's first national women's expo that it's time Fijians stand up for their rights.

More than 2000 women from around Fiji are in Suva for the three day expo which was launched yesterday.

The expo is designed to showcase their products, skills, and build new relationships with potential investors and buyers.

In his speech Rear Admiral Frank Bainimarama said the government has either tightened laws or pioneered new ones to give women an unprecedented level of protection, including the first domestic violence laws.

But he says the treatment of women is still a real issue which will require a change in mindset.

Mr Bainimarama says it's time Fijians stand up for their rights and the rights of others in order to truly take advantage of a wonderful period in the country's history.
