A French journalist has been arrested by Indonesian police in Papua province after reportedly conducting illegal reporting activities.

Charles Thomas Tendeiswas arrested by the Jayawijaya police in Wamena along with three men who police say are suspected West Papuan separatists.

A police spokesman has told local media that the Frenchman had violated his tourist visa by carrying out reporting activities.

He says both foreign journalists and NGO workers remain banned by the central government from conducting reports or research activities in the Papua region.

He says the Frenchman and the three separatist suspects will be taken to Jayapura for further investigation.
