Sport: PNG Mosquitoes full of confidence

1:45 pm on 13 August 2014

Papua New Guinea captain John James says the Mosquitoes squad is full of confidence but determined to take things game by game in their bid for AFL International Cup glory.

PNG thrashed Japan 163-6 in their first match on Sunday and are back in action on Wednesday afternoon against minnows India, who were were overwhelmed 172-6 by Tonga in their first game.

John James is one of the old heads in the Mosquitoes team, having been a part of the title winning team in 2008 and the side beaten in the final three years ago.

He says the team has started strongly and the aim is to keep improving.

"At the moment we're not worried about anyone, like how the other teams are going and stuff. All we're worried about is ourself - how we go on the field, what we do and play as a team to get the win and then worry about the next one we play. We won't under-estimate them because obviously we know they're here as well to represent their country to play football but we will use what we have to take on them and hopefully we can beat them by a good margin".

Elsewhere in the second round, Nauru are up against Great Britain, Fiji face newcomers Indonesia and Tonga's men take on South Africa, with the women up against Ireland.
