Fresh Tahiti call to dismiss Flosse

A senior French Polynesian opposition politician, Jacqui Drollet, has written to two courts and the French justice minister, urging them to apply the law and dismiss the president, Gaston Flosse.

Last month, the territory's leader lost his appeal in a major corruption case in France's highest court and was ordered to relinquish his offices for three years.

However, the French high commissioner refused to deliver the verdict and allowed Flosse to stay in office and seek a presidential pardon.

In a letter to the highest administrative court in Paris, Mr Drollet says the high commissioner overstepped his powers in not notifying Flosse and by failing to do his job, he should in addition be punished for incompetence.

Writing to the justice minister Christiane Taubira, Mr Drollet says the apparent indifference of the government gives the impression that a top level deal is being prepared to soften Flosse's sentence.

He says Flosse appears sure of his impunity and openly challenges the court rulings.
