Kiribati and Taiwan have signed a 20 million US dollar loan agreement to support the upgrade of the Bonriki International Airport on Tarawa.
Taiwan's loan will be provided through its International Cooperation and Development Fund, the ICDF.
It will be used to among other things rehabilitate the runway, taxiway and apron area.
Major improvements to Kiribati's main airport are deemed to be essential as the infrastructure of the airport is insufficient and conditions are well below international standards.
