American Samoa's government has agreed to pay nearly 200 thousand US dollars in back wages to more than 100 employees.
The US Labour Department says that following an investigation, the territory's government owes 177 thousand dollars to 111 employees for overtime hours worked, which has to be paid by the end the month.
It also says the territorial government failed to pay 1,400 people for over 130 thousand additional hours worked, which will have to be paid back throughout the year.
The director of the Labour department's Hawaii office, Terrance Trotter, says the findings reflect the department's collaborative efforts with Pago Pago officials to correct past deficiencies.
He says staff will continue to be trained on the compliance principles of the Fair Labour Standards Act.
