The Secretariat of the Pacific Community says it has substantially reduced its carbon footprint during the first year of its emissions reduction programme.
In late 2012, the SPC adopted a target of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent below its 2011 level by the end of 2016.
It says its carbon footprint has been reduced by 12 percent, equivalent to more than 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, even though the organisation has grown in activity and number of staff.
SPC has cut electricity consumption, uses less transport, fuel and paper, and has put into place more effective management of its waste at its offices in Noumea, Suva, Pohnpei and Honiara to meet this goal.
Its Director General, Colin Tukuitonga, says the SPC is happy with its progress but it still has a lot to do.
