Water supply problems for Tonga's Niuatoputapu

7:54 pm on 28 August 2014

Problems with the water supply to new houses on Tonga's Niuatoputapu means residents are collecting rain water to meet their daily needs.

The houses were built with assistance from the World Bank following the destruction of coastal communities by a tsunami in September 2009.

But Radio Tonga reports over seventy families in Niuatoputapu have had issues with their water supply systems for more than a year.

The Government representative on the island, Feingakau 'Iloa, told the radio station the water connection to the homes is not strong enough to pump the water from the central supply.

He says they have approval for the Japanese government to upgrade the water supply and are now waiting for the contractors.
