Sport: Cricket PNG welcome back ex coach Andy Bichel for Big Bash

11:33 am on 30 August 2014

Former Barramundi's cricket coach Andy Bichel is back in Papua New Guinea this weekend as a special guest for today's Don't Drink and Drive Twenty20 Big Bash in Port Moresby.

Bichel coached the Barramundi's between 2009 and 2011, and has since held roles with the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League and as a selector for the Australian national team.

Former Sri Lankan internationals Asanka Gurusinha and Arjuna Ranatunga and ex Australia fast bowler Carl Rackemann are also taking part in the Big Bash match, alongside current PNG players.

Cricket PNG General Manager Greg Campbell says the current Barramundi's team owe a lot of their success to the groundwork put in under Bichel.

"When he left three years ago he probably didn't want to leave at that stage but he's jumped at the chance to come back and I know he's looking forward to working with the national team and rekindling old acquaintances but the boys are excited to see Andy because in a way he did all the hard work. When he arrived we didn't have turf wickets here, we didn't have much practice facilities so Mr Bichel was more or less the hands on of getting all this stuff going."
