The Papua New Guinea Hunters have missed out on a playoff berth in the Queensland Cup rugby league competition, after results went against them in the final round of the regular season.

The Hunters collected two points from the bye to finish with 33 points from 26 matches.

But nearest rivals Ipswich Jets and Tweed Heads both managed tight victories to hold onto the final two positions in the top five.

Hunters CEO Brad Tassell says their debut season has been a big learning curve for all involved.

"From the management right through to the coaches [and] through to the players. For the first year a lot of people exposed to that level of football, and for those of us who have been at that level it's been an experience as well for us. I think the team stuck together, and the coaches and the management have stuck together, and there's a very close bond within the club and I think it's going to hold us in good stead for next year".
