Detained journalists in Papua were 'doing their duty'

Two French journalists detained in Jayapura have said that they were simply carrying out their journalistic duties while in Papua.

Robert Dandois and Valentine Bourrat were arrested in Wamena last month for allegedly violating their tourist visas by reporting for a French-German television station, Arte.

The Antara news agency reports the head of the Jayapura Immigration Office, Gradu Tampubolon, as saying the pair had met various West Papua separatist groups and pro-independence leaders.

Mr Tampubolon says the pair have been charged in relation to violating their visas.

The Indonesian government usually bans foreign journalists from Papua, which has been the scene of a low-level independence war for close to 50 years.
