Coastal monitoring stations have been set up in Papua New Guinea aimed at reducing sea incidents.

PNG Village reports the National Maritime Safety Authority has set up sensors, which use radio-aided detection and automatic weather monitors.

They are based at Alotau in Milne Bay, Tuam in Morobe Province and St George in New Ireland Province.

The Chief Executive Officer of the NMSA, Paul Unas, says careful analysis of shipping movement and trends were studied to provide the best location for the stations.

He says the system meets international standards.

Mr Unas says security cameras at the remote sites will monitor the equipment to protect it from vandals.
