No progress on release of Fiji soldiers

11:14 am on 4 September 2014

Fiji's military commander says there's no progress on the release of 45 Fijian troops held captive by the Al Nusra Front rebel group in Syria.

Commander Brigadier General Mosese Tikoitoga told FBC negotiators are still in talks with the rebel group to have the peacekeepers released.

He adds the decision to replace the 45 soldiers will be made after the captured soldiers are free.

He says they will be psychologically assessed and asked if they want to continue with the UN Mission in the Golan Heights.

If any of the 45 troops decide to return home, the RFMF will send replacements.

Al Nusra has given no deadline for the UN to meet its three demands for their release which are: removal from the UN terrorist list, humanitarian aid, and compensation for three rebels who died in a shootout with UN officers.
