23 candidates have applied for the position of Vanuatu's Head of State ahead of the election next Wednesday.

The former Head of State, Johnson Iolou Abbil, had his term end on September the 2nd.

The Adviser to the Electoral Office, Martin Tete, says he cannot name the candidates yet, but does not believe many of them will be processed beyond the screening stage.

The Vanuatu Daily Post has named the leader of the Melanesian Progressive Party, Barak Sope, the former leader of Vanuatu Republican Party, Maxime Carlot Korman, and a Nagriamel Movement candidate, Alfred Maliu as some of the candidates.

According to the Elections of the President Act, the list of suitable candidates can be made known to the public not less than two days before the day fixed for the election.
