Grounded ship in CNMI towed to port

In the Northern Marianas, the grounded container ship Paul Russ was towed to port Thursday night after getting the go-signal from the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

The office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, which is overseeing the salvaging of the ship, was forced to tow the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged vessel because of worsening weather generating 6-foot swells on the Saipan Lagoon.

A concern on Wednesday was the discovery of unexploded ordnance around the vessel, but authorities say the World War II torpedoes found were degraded, and not to expected to explode when the vessel is towed.
