A Pacific media watchdog says there is no place for intimidation or violence against journalists, following reports that two Fiji Sun journalists were threatened.

A Pacific media watch dog says there is no place for intimidation or violence against journalists, following reports that two Fiji Sun journalists were threatened after reporting that an opposition politician had pulled out of a TV debate.

The chair of the Pacific Freedom Forum, Titi Gabi, says the threats are despicable and cowardly.

She says the cornerstone of any democracy is a free and vibrant media, which is especially important as Fiji approaches its first elections in nearly 8 years.

A second co-chair of the body, Monica Miller, says the threats reflect a society where media coverage of relatively routine political events is no longer seen as normal.

She says the military regime must bear some responsibility for any electoral tension, because they have created an environment where freedom of speech is seen by some as deserving of death.
