Tonga holds national consultation to fight violence

8:55 pm on 17 September 2014

A national consultation on peace, unity and development currently underway in Tonga, aims to develop a means for combatting issues such as violence.

The National Committee, Capacity on Peace and Development, is running workshops involving government officials and more than 80 prominent community leaders.

Organiser, Janet Murdock, says the workshops are addressing five priorities; violence in schools, domestic violence, assistance to the outer islands, youth idleness and communication between government and civil society.

That committee has been on the forefront of leading action here in Tonga for driving sort of a national strategy. If we address these issues, it'll make a difference to the quality of peace in the country.
