Vanuatu yet to elect president

2:53 pm on 22 September 2014

The Vanuatu Electoral College will this afternoon hold an unprecedented seventh round of voting to try and elect a new President.

This is after this morning's voting saw no candidate yet again secure a two third majority required to be made president.

Internal divisions in both the government and the opposition are understood to be the cause of the impasse.

But time is running out for the college which consists of the 52 members of parliament plus the six provincial governors.

Local sources say this Wednesday is the last day of a three-week period given in the constitution for the election of a new President.
