Fiji's main opposition party says despite a disappointing result for the party, there will be positive changes in the upcoming parliament.

The leader of the Sodelpa party, Ro Teimumu Kepa, says her party has gone from zero representation to 15 MPs.

She says along with the National Federation Party they will finally be able to keep the government in check after eight years of there being no oppposition.

"From the first day of the sitting of the new parliament accountability returns to FIji. Opposition MPs will have access to government documentation and information and as the opposition we now have a platform from which to launch our pursuit of the truth and we will expose all of the shortcomings of the government."
