Sport: Niue rugby league takes another big step against the Philippines

2:23 pm on 4 October 2014

The Niue rugby league team will contest just their second ever international this afternoon against the Philippines in Western Sydney.

The Pacific nation made their test debut against Vanuatu last year and head coach Brendan Perenara says interest in the team is growing steadily through word of mouth.

Although Perenara admits he's not entirely sure what to expect from the Philippines in Wentworthville.

"I know they've got a lot of players coming from the Queensland Cup and they have a couple of internationals playing NRL, in Kevin Gordon and Matty Srama, playing for the Titans. We pretty much want to just focus on getting our team together - the culture side of it - and getting the Niuean boys to come back and play for their heritage. Footy will take care of itself".
