A five year agreement has been signed to help Tokelau protect its coastal areas and help preserve native plants that are on the verge of extinction.
The Coastal and Land Management project has been signed by the Tokelau government and the Food and Agriculture Organisation.
The focus is to replant native plants in forest and coastal areas that are sensitive to erosion.
As part of the project Tokelau's furthest island, Atafu will soon be home to swamp mangroves from Fiji, provided by the Secretariat of the Pacific Commission.
The introduction of the plant to Tokelau has been chosen because of it's protection from erosion and extreme weather events, and is ideal for access to fisheries.
The total cost of the project is US$40,000, and is Tokelau's first project with the Food and Agriculture Organisation since being an associate member in 2011.
