PNG top cop worried about poverty and housing

A senior police chief in Papua New Guinea says the national capital district is in danger of becoming one big squatter settlement.

The commander of NCD-Central, Assistant Commissioner Jerry Frank, made the comment as he was commending the Paga Hill Development Company for relocating Paga Hill settlers to Six Mile.

He says in all the years he has served he has never seen such a gesture by anyone individual, company or even government organisation.

Mr Frank used the event to call on the authorities to take immediate action to address the increasing illegal squatter settlements within the National Capital District.

He says looking around Port Moresby there have been a number of evictions in recent times where entire communities have been destroyed and men, women and children thrown out with nowhere to go.
