French journos may soon face trial in Indonesia

Two French journalists arrested in Indonesia for allegedly violating their visa conditions may soon face trial.

Valentine Bourrat and Thomas Dandois were arrested in Papua for reporting without a press visa, and now face up to five years in prison.

Having been detained in Jayapura for the last two months, their case has now been handed over to Papua's chief prosecutor.

The news agency DPA quotes the prosecutor as saying a decision on whether the case will go to court is expected within seven days.

The media organisation Reporters Without Borders has launched a petition for the immediate release of the pair.

Its Secretary General, Christophe Deloire, says they did not apply for press visas because they are rarely granted, and would have resulted in restrictions on their ability to report freely.
