The American Samoa government is to close a loophole in the immigration law which allows businesses to sponsor foreigners into the territory.
The Attorney General Talauega Eleasalo Ale says the bill would stop companies being formed as wholly owned and operated by foreign nationals which then become the sponsor for the owner and operator, or other aliens.
The law change would mean a corporation which sponsors a foreigner must be certified by the Attorney General, have an established record of financial responsibility, and able to show good corporate citizenship.
The bill also specifies that no business may sponsor an alien who has any control or interest in the sponsoring corporation.
