Tonga may still need reserved seats - women's advocate

A women's advocate in Tonga says she is full of praise for the increased number of women contesting next month's election but says dramatic steps may still be needed.

16 women will contest the election on November the 27th - up from 11 - while the overall number of candidates is down.

Campaigner Ofa Guttenbeil Likiliki of the Women's and Children's Crisis Centre says if this is again the case then the Government must do something.

"In terms of what are other approaches, what is the alternative. One of which is, of course, the temporary special measures [reserved seats] which I have advocated for years, so hopefully we do get some more women this election and if we don't we have take some dramatic measures."
