Vanuatu vendors asked to stop crabs from biting people

10:17 am on 29 October 2014

All vendors who sell live crabs in Vanuatu's Port Vila, are being asked to tie their crabs securely on the table, and place them away from the reach of little children.

Port Vila's Market House Management made the call after a giant New Caledonian mud crab bit a man on the palm of his hand, and a coconut crab bit a toddler on his thumb.

The call comes as the Port Vila Market House becomes a popular venue for tourists to visit.

The management says it's concerned that any negative publicity could tarnish the reputation of the popular market.
