An American Samoa Government official is to face charges in a federal court in Washington D.C.

John Emil Kruse and his wife Elaine Gurr Kruse, are both charged with one count of converting federal funds for their own use.

Mr Kruse is the government's chief procurement officer and has not made any public comment since the court revelation.

It is the first case being prosecuted by the federal government over allegations American Samoa recipients of money awarded under a scheme to build low income housing, used the money for other purposes.

Mr Kruse and his wife received more than 880 thousand US dollars through the programme, which was administered locally by the Development Bank of American Samoa.
