The former manager of an American Samoan shipping company has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than 200,000 US dollars of company funds.

Lepuiai Allen Mayer, who was originally charged with embezzlement, forgery and stealing, on Wednesday pleaded guilty to the embezzlement count under a plea agreement.

The other charges were dismissed by the court.

Mayer admitted that between July 2012 and October last year, while he was manager of Pacific Shipping Services he collected payments from customers and deposited them in a bank account under the company's name but with him as the sole signatory.

He later withdrew the money and used it for personal gain.

As part of the plea agreement the defendant is to pay restitution of most of the money.
