1:02 pm on 18 November 2014

Fiji's Director of Public Prosecutions has closed the case against Joseva Bilitaki who was allegedly beaten when arrested by police two months ago.

The retired school teacher and song writer was alleged to have sent annoying text messages to the Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama.

The DPP's office has been reviewing the evidence in the case after it had been referred by the police and it now says there is insufficient evidence of any wrongdoing by Mr Bilitaki.

The DPP Christopher Pryde also said there was insufficient evidence to proceed on a charge of assault.

Fiji Live reports Mr Pryde has raised concerns over the circumstances of the arrest and detention and he said he intended to raise the matter with the Police Commissioner Ben Groenewald.
