Three teams are unbeaten after day one of the East Asia Pacific Men's Cricket Trophy in Lismore, New South Wales.

Defending champions Papua New Guinea crushed the Cook Islands by eight wickets first up, with Lega Siaka smashing 88 from just 29 deliveries, before holding off Fiji by 22 runs in their afternoon clash.

Vanuatu, who are aiming to go one better than their runners-up finish from the past two tournaments, beat the Philippines by six wickets and the Cook Islands by five.

The other unbeaten team is Samoa, who gave new coach Anthony Bowler a perfect start to his tenure, with a 20 run win over Japan and narrow two run triumph against the Philippines.

Japan and Fiji both managed a win and a loss on day one while the Philippines, Indonesia and the Cook Islands are still searching for their first victory.

The top-ranked team after the seven-match round-robin will qualify for next year's ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in Scotland and Ireland.
