Sport: Fiji 7s to receive bonus payments but improvements needed

3:30 pm on 25 November 2014

Fiji sevens coach Ben Ryan says there are still improvements to be made with player contracts but insists his team has not been distracted by off-field disputes in the build-up to Dubai.

Last week the Fiji Rugby Union denied knowledge of a claim by former sponsor Digicel that the company released a payment of FJ$20,000 to players at the Gold Coast Sevens.

12 members of the sevens squad are now contracted full-time to the Fiji Rugby Union but current sponsor Vodafone was late in delivering bonus payments to the players.

Ben Ryan says the contracting issue is still a work in progess but there has never been any complaints from the players.

"Well I certainly know that the FRU have been on-time with payments and they will be getting their second salary on Thursday, and Vodafone have promised that the bonuses will be paid into that account then on Thursday. We definitely have some work to do on the entire contractual situation around bonuses and salaries and everything else because I think everyone is in an agreement on the island that the amount of revenue that's coming in doesn't match the expenditure that's needed to run the Fiji Rugby Union and obviously Fiji sevens team".

The Fiji squad leaves this week for Abu Dhabi where they will spend a few extra days preparing for the defence of their Dubai crown.
