Tongans waiting on poll results

7:57 pm on 27 November 2014

Final results are still to come for Tonga's elections today but indicative figures point to a close tussle in the Tongatapu 3 constituency.

The seat had been picked as a hard to call prior to the poll and Matangi Tonga reports 3 separate polling places have been topped by different candidates, Tevita Palu, Siaosi Sovaleni and Clive Edwards.

Seven hours of voting ended at 4pm with 105 candidates, 39 less than in 2010, competing for the 17 People's Representatives seats.

In Tongatapu 1 the veteran democracy campaigner, Akilisi Pohiva, is out in front while several other members of his Democracy Party are on track to win seats.

Journalist Mateni Tapueluelu is leading in Tongatapu 4 and former finance minister Aisake Eke is well ahead in Tongatapu 5.

Matangi Tonga reports that there were 21 percent more registered voters for this poll compared with 4 years ago.

Meanwhile earlier today the nobles chose their nine MPs with just one change from 2010 with

Lord Tuiha'agana replacing Lord Fakafanua on Ha'apai.
