Tuna Commission 'rhetoric' slammed

12:06 pm on 2 December 2014

]A senior Marshall Islands fisheries official has questioned the effectiveness of the Tuna Commission

The Director of the Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority, Glenn Joseph, is not satisfied with the Commission's conservation and management measures which are meant to ensure the survival of dwindling tuna species.

Mr Joseph who is attending a summit of the Commission says it's only the Pacific islands who have set limits and stuck to them.

He also says after ten years the distant water nations haven't met their obligations to provide catch information.

"Because in the last ten years it's been just rhetoric. We support you guys and when it comes to push and shove, we don't know what you mean."

Mr Joseph says the Tuna Commission is weak because of the lack of sanctions.
