Sport: Fiji to approach Dubai Sevens with clean slate

9:46 am on 5 December 2014

The Fiji men begin the defence of their Dubai Sevens crown on Friday with pool matches against France, Brazil and Argentina.

Ben Ryan's side top the standings from Pacific rivals Samoa, after winning the opening leg of the season on the Gold Coast, but the coach says they're not getting carried away.

"The boys have looked at it and said let's start all over again, let's assume this is the first tournament - it's there for us to make a first impression. There's things that I wasn't very happy about in Gold Coast: our lineout, for example, was pretty poor - 50 percent retainment rate - and so there's lots of areas that we've had to work on, so by no means do we feel that we are resting. We feel as though we need to keep pushing hard now and nail down our point that we are a good side and demand a bit of respect I suppose."

Meanwhile Samoa face Scotland, Japan and New Zealand on day one, with former New Zealand Sevens rep Tim Nanai-Williams named to make his debut for the Manu Sevens team.
