Sport: Pini busy as PNG swimmers witness World Record

Papua New Guinea finished 17 seconds off a world record pace in the men's 4x50m medley relay during day two of the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Doha.

The Russian team set a new benchmark time of 1:32.78, with PNG touching home last in the same heat, but 15th overall, in a time of 1:49.20.

PNG's 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ryan Pini backed up to finish 42nd in the men's 50m freestyle in 22.16 and also helped his country to a 20th placing in the 4x50m medley.

Fiji's Matelita Buadromo was the best-placed Pacific swimmer in both the women's 100m freestyle heats, finishing 59th in 57.96, and the women's 100m Individual Medley in 1:06.75.

In other Pacific results, Tahiti's Heimanu Sichan was 42nd in the men's 400m Individual Medley in 4.46.13.

Meanwhile Annie Hepler from the Marshall Islands was 57th in the 50m butterfly in a time of 30.41.
