Sport: Fiji hockey targets further home success

11:24 am on 6 December 2014

The Fiji men's hockey coach is eyeing a clean sweep of the World League and Oceania Pacific Cup tournaments beginning in Suva today.

The Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Samoa men are contesting World League Round One, with Australia Country and the New Zealand President's XI also in town for the Oceania Pacific Cup.

The same five teams will contest the women's competitions, along with Vanuatu.

Shaun Corrie coached the Fiji women to double success two years ago and is targeting a similar result now he's in charge of the men.

"I know the men's going to be a whole lot tougher. The men's game is faster [and] way more technical. It is challenging trying to ensure they improve from where [former men's coach] Hector [Smith] left off. We want to finish off at the top of both tournaments but taking each game as it comes. We know the Island teams have been improving and obviously the Kiwi and Aussie teams that come down every year are quite tough."

The Fiji men take on Samoa in their opening match this afternoon, with the New Zealand President's XI facing Papua New Guinea.

The Fiji women are up against Vanuatu, Australia Country take on PNG and Samoa face New Zealand.
