7:08 pm on 11 December 2014

The losing candidate in the Solomon Islands prime ministerial race, Jeremiah Manele, is to be the opposition leader once a new Speaker of Parliament has been chosen and can receive the nomination.

At the same time the independent group in parliament has put forward a former deputy prime minister, Manasseh Maelanga, as their leader.

Meanwhile, intense negotiations continue within the ranks of the Democratic Coalition for Change government of the new prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare, who is yet to name his deputy and cabinet.

Mr Sogavare has until the end of the month to pass a resolution in parliament which will ensure that government spending can continue at current levels until their budget is prepared.
