Solomons parliament to meet Wednesday

10:25 am on 15 December 2014

Solomon Islands 10th Parliament will sit for the first time on Wednesday to elect a new speaker and deputy speaker of parliament.

The Governor General Sir Frank Kabui set the date for the meeting which will also see the 50 new MPs sworn in.

The prime minister Manasseh Sogavare has yet to name his cabinet ministers but Radio New Zealand International understands he is having some difficulty with several MPs demanding key portfolios.

There is some urgency for the new government to pass a resolution for the continuation of government spending which expires at the end of the month.
