The Fiji women's hockey team will not compete at the World League tournament in India due to a lack of finance, while the men's team have been given three weeks to rustle up some funds to pay for their trip to Singapore.
The Fiji teams finished top of the Round 1 event in Suva against their Pacific rivals last week to qualify for the next stage.
The men's tournament will be held in Singapore late next month while the women were due to travel to Delhi in March.
National Head Coach Hector Smith Senior says at a meeting on Wednesday the Fiji Hockey Federation decided they could not afford to send both teams overseas.
The men were given preference based on experience and recent form and have until January the seventh to come up with the money required.
"We laid out basically what it would cost us and what is required of us and the deadline where we can say yes or no. Right now I feel out of ten we are about five of going. We know what the costs [are] out there and obviously there is players contribution side and the national federation side and we have applied to various funding bodies for assistance".
Papua New Guinea have expressed an interest in replacing the Fiji women as the Oceania representative in India but also face funding challenges, with the Pacific Games in Port Moresby next year.
