Marshalls murder hearing in High Court

7:19 am on 5 January 2015

A High Court hearing for the man accused of one of only two murders in the Marshall Islands' capital of Majuro in 2014 will get underway this week.

Tuesday's hearing is expected to see a plea from Tareti Reiher, who is accused of murdering Phillip Kilma on December 6th near Majuro Atoll police station in the capital.

Reiher is charged with murder, manslaughter, aggravated assault and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Reiher faces a 25 years-to-life sentence if he is convicted.

At an initial court appearance before Christmas, the Chief Justice found probable cause to believe that Reiher committed the crimes as charged.

The police say Mr Kilma was stabbed and slashed multiple times with a seven-inch knife blade.

The December murder was Majuro's second murder of 2014.
