New Caledonia braces for heavy rain

3:59 pm on 13 January 2015

A heavy rain warning has been issued for much of New Caledonia from tonight as the territory will be affected by a depression now to its northwest.

An orange alert will be in force until midday tomorrow for the northern and central parts of the main island as well as the Loyalty Island group.

About 200 millimetres of rain are expected over a 12-hour period, with about 300 millimetres falling as part of the low.

Civil defence is advising people to minimise travel and keep listening out for weather updates.

People are also advised to stay away from trees because of possible lightning strikes.
