Mock-tsunami drill in Pacific countries this week

2:29 pm on 3 February 2015

30 countries will participate this week in a mock-tsunami scenario called the Exercise Pacific Wave 15.

The week-long scenario has been promoted by UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanic Commission, and encourages countries to select a distant or regional event that would impact their country and enact its procedures sometime this week.

The Solomon Star reports the Director of the Solomon Islands Meteorological Services, David Hiriasia, as saying tsunamis in recent years both in the Pacific and as far as Chile have increased the need to be more prepared.

The Solomon Islands have confirmed their exercise will take place on Wednesday, and will involve government and agencies in decision-making procedures.

The Solomon Islands public are also encouraged to participate by calling the Emergency Telephone Number 955 when warnings are heard.
