PNG's Lae faces severe water shortage

6:04 pm on 3 February 2015

Papua New Guinea's second city, Lae, is facing a major water crisis after a bore pump broke as a result of frequent power blackouts in the city.

The Post Courier reports businesses, houses, government institutions and schools have all been affected.

A senior manager at Water PNG, Vincent Raka, says one water pump has been restored, but with two other pumps still down, another is needed in order to restore full supply to the whole city.

Mr Raka says it's the reponsibility of both Water PNG and PNG Power to work together to solve the problem, and has called on PNG Power to provide a reliable service so the pumps won't be affected.
