Papua New Guinea's chief justice, Sir Salamo Injia, says the new Court of Appeal will be set up once the appropriate amendment to the constitution is passed by Parliament.

The National newspaper says he made the announcement during this week's groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the $US220 million court complex at Waigani in Port Moresby.

It will accommodate three separate courts - the Supreme Court, the National Court and the new Court of Appeal.

Sir Salamo says the project will take up to three years to complete.
