Sport: Fiji to face Euro champs Germany at U20 World Cup

8:14 am on 11 February 2015

Fiji have been handed a demanding pool for the Under 20 Football World Cup, including a blockbuster opening clash against European champions Germany.

The Oceania winners, who are competing at the World Cup for the first time, will also face Uzbekistan and Honduras in Group F when the tournament kicks off in New Zealand at the end of May.

Fiji FA's Technical Director Ravinesh Kumar, who coached the team to qualification, is relishing the challenge ahead and says it's an honour to play Germany - a nation that is the current world champions.

The squad leaves on Friday for a tour of Asia, which the President of the Fiji Football Association, Rajesh Patel, says is an important step in their World Cup preparations.

"We're playing Myanmar [and] Uzbekistan - they're both World Cup Under 20-bound - and then we're playing three games in Malaysia before the team flies back to Fiji".

Rajesh Patel says a tour to the United States is also under discussion.

Meanwhile the World Cup hosts, and fellow Oceania representatives, New Zealand have been drawn in a pool featuring the USA, Ukraine and Myanmar.
