Fiji's Prime Minister has thanked the visiting United Arab Emirates' Foreign Affairs Minister for his country's support for the Pacific Islands Development Forum.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan met Fiji government ministers before his talks with Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama who forged diplomatic ties with UAE in 2010.

In his speech to mark the visit, Mr Bainimarama paid tribute to the relationship between the countries, saying Fiji had benefitted greatly from opening an embassy in Abu Dhabi.

He told the Sheikh that Fiji and the Pacific Islands region owe a debt of gratitude to the UAE's financial contribution to the Pacific Islands Development Forum.

The Prime Minister says the Fiji-initiated regional organisation hopes that while it is still in its infancy the UAE continues its support, extending an invitation for the Arabs to attend the PIDF's third annual summit in Fiji in August.
