The national broadcaster is to get assistance from the Pacific Media Assistance Scheme, PACMAS, to develop the station.

Glen Hughes of PACMAS says a feasibility study on the venture is nearly completed and will be submitted to the SIBC board before going before the government for approval.

The SIBC general manager Ashley Wickham says additional donor funding and extensive training for local staff will be needed to establish the station.

He says he expects it will take five to six years to recover establishment costs.

The prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare, has given the government's backing but has stressed the importance of appropriate programming and professional news production.
