The Nauru government is allowing access to the community for what it calls a select number of asylum seekers from the Australian run detention camps.
It says its Open Centre scheme will initially be for three days a week, from 9am to 5pm.
Just 20 of the about 800 asylum seekers were involved on Wednesday with another 40 scheduled for Saturday and 60 on Monday.
So far only women and young children have been chosen.
The government says it hopes this will ease the tension and frustration in the camps and prepare the asylum seekers for a future in the Nauru community if they are declared genuine refugees.
There are already about 500 refugees on the island.
All those being releases have been given training and education about Nauruan culture, general behaviour and conduct.
All the participants have had to sign a code of conduct.
