New Caledonia's caretaker president, Cynthia Ligeard, has flown to Paris, reportedly to meet government leaders amid a political crisis in Noumea.

The local newspaper says her brief visit includes talks with the overseas minister, the Senate and the head of the National Assembly's law commission.

It says the discussions may touch on a call to hold an extraordinary meeting of the signatories of the Noumea Accord, which expires in 2018 when the territory is scheduled to hold an independence referendum.

Ms Ligeard's government fell in December amid disagreements within the dominant anti-independence camp, and while the same executive was re-elected two weeks later, none of the candidates for the presidency has been able to secure a majority.

The political class has been implored by France to seek a dialogue to end the stalemate.
